Scholarships

The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to exceptional student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential.

Eligibility requirements:

• A high school senior
• From at least one of the following ethnicities: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian/Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American
• Pell-eligible
• A US citizen, national, or permanent resident
• In a good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)

Additionally, a student must plan to enroll full-time, in a four-year degree program, at a US accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university.

Ideal Candidate

An ideal candidate will have:

• An outstanding academic record in high school (in the top 10% of his/her graduating class)
• Demonstrated leadership ability (e.g., as shown through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities)
• Exceptional personal success skills (e.g., emotional maturity, motivation, perseverance, etc.)

The Dell Scholars Program, sponsored by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, is designed to support high school seniors who have demonstrated significant perseverance in overcoming obstacles to achieve their academic goals. Here are some key details about the program:

Eligibility
- Academic Achievement: Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 2.4 on a 4.0 scale.
- Financial Need: The program is aimed at students from low-income backgrounds.
- Personal Characteristics: Demonstrated perseverance, ambition, and the ability to overcome obstacles are essential.

Benefits
- Scholarship Award: Each Dell Scholar receives a $20,000 scholarship over a maximum of six years, to be used for higher education expenses.
- Academic Support: Recipients get access to a variety of support services, including mentoring and academic coaching.
- Technology: Scholars receive a laptop and other necessary technology to support their education.

 Application Process
1. Application Form: Complete the online application, which includes personal information, academic achievements, and essays.
2. Essays: Write about personal experiences that demonstrate perseverance and overcoming challenges.
3. Letters of Recommendation: Submit letters from people who can attest to your character and achievements.
4. Transcript and Test Scores: Provide high school transcripts and standardized test scores, if applicable.

Application Timeline
- Typically Open: Applications open in early November.
- Deadline: Usually in early December.

The BK Scholars Program is the Foundation’s flagship program, established to honor the legacy of the Burger King brand’s co-founder James W. McLamore, whose commitment to philanthropy and education made him a pillar of community service throughout his lifetime. Through the program, we award scholarships to deserving high school seniors and Burger King® employees and their families to help advance their education. Because of Jim, his legacy, and the support of franchisees, the scholars program has now awarded a total of $60 million in scholarships to more than 51,000 deserving students throughout North America since 2000.  

Scholarships range from $1,000 to $60,000 and are intended to offset the cost of attending college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Recipients are selected through an application process that takes into consideration their grade point average (GPA), work experience, extracurricular activities, financial need and community service. In 2024 alone, the Foundation awarded over $4.5 million in scholarships to nearly 4,200 students. Scholarship status updates were shared on Monday, April 20, 2024. 

The application period for 2024-2025 will open from October 15, 2024, to December 16, 2024. Scholarship recipients will be notified in April 2025.

SECU Foundation established the People Helping People four-year scholarship program to help North Carolina public high school students attend college. Each of the 115 North Carolina Local Education Agencies (LEAs)/School Districts will receive a minimum of one scholarship valued at $10,000 payable at $1,250 per semester for up to eight consecutive semesters for a senior to attend one of the 16 constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina System.

Recipients of the scholarship will be selected by the LEA Scholarship Selection Committee provided they meet all eligibility criteria. Scholarship recipient information must be submitted by the Scholarship Selection Committee at each LEA. No individual applications are reviewed by the Foundation.

The Florence Kidder Memorial Scholarship (FKMS) honors the memory of the first president of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina, Florence Hill Kidder.

• Six scholarships will be awarded in one year: First place - $3,000, second place - $1,000, third place - $800 and three fourth places - $400.
• Scholarships are not renewable.
• Awarded to a high school senior who plans to attend a post-secondary institution in North Carolina.

NC Alpha Delta Kappa Student Achievement Scholarship

through the North Carolina Community Foundation

(www.nccommunityfoundation.org)

This is a $2000 scholarship.

CRITERIA –

*Graduating senior of an accredited North Carolina high school pursuing an education degree at a school of higher learning

*An unweighted GPA of 2.5 to 3.5

*An SAT score of 990 to 1130 or an ACT composite score of 20 to 24

* Applicants are also judged based on their service to school, community and church, as well as their good character, integrity and leadership potential. 

This scholarship is designed for students with grades and scores falling within these ranges only. Students with lower or higher scores will not be considered.

APPLICATION PROCESS –

Students wishing to apply should check the NCCF website and watch for the updated application, usually in January. Then follow the NCCF guidelines to apply only through their online application portal. No printed or emailed applications will be accepted.
